Christa Pike Speaks After Failed Execution

Christa Pike, 50, is conscious and speaking after surviving Tennessee’s failed execution attempt on September 30, in which she received two doses of pentobarbital. Her attorneys say she suffered severe burns and blistering to her arms and remains hospitalized for critical care, with a long recovery and uncertain prognosis; they had warned that her blood-clotting condition and small veins could complicate the injection. Pike’s lawyer is asking Gov. Bill Lee to commute her death sentence to life imprisonment, arguing the attempt was torturous. Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 torture and murder of Colleen Slemmer and is believed to be the first person in the United States known to survive a complete execution attempt. Tennessee has ordered a review of the failure and paused the remaining scheduled execution for 2026; officials have not said whether they will try to execute Pike again, and Slemmer’s mother has expressed doubt that the state will make another attempt.
